New Garden Club Started

Hey gardeners and plant enthusiasts!

FOBP is rallying a Garden Club to take care of the Welcome Bed at the park. You may have noticed how great it’s looking thanks to Alicia and Garret Lewis, Claire Simmons, Karen and George Donsbach, Barbara Rice,Tucker Dona, and Kat Correa! All native and adapted plants were chosen with guidance from Alicia and the city’s Grow Green guide. Gardeners have also brought volunteer plants from their own yard to fill in the large space.

The Welcome Bed is a bigger endeavor these days since the city added the ADA parking space and built the retaining wall around the area. This garden bed desperately needs our TLC more than the twice yearly It’s My Park Days.

Our evolving ideas begin with:

—monthly or bi-monthly meetups to weed/pull Bermuda, talk ideas and design, learn about plants, and make friends
—adding good top soil mixed with compost to amend the soil
—relying on volunteer waterers to get new plants going (Thanks Karen and George Donsbach!)
—adopted sections to showcase pollinator host plants for caterpillars and nectar plants for bees, butterflies, moths, and hummingbirds
—plant markers to identify plants and the wildlife they support
—Garden Club signs with website and donation info

Doesn’t all that sound wonderful? But nothing happens without YOUR loving care to bring these and other ideas you have to life. We also have the Shelton Memorial and pool planting beds that we’d like to add to our rotation.

Grab a friend and reach out to us to join the Garden Club.
